Earlier this month, the New York Times published Christine Muhlke's selection of 12 of the season's most interesting cookbooks. One of those books, The Big Sur Bakery Cookbook, was not yet released. It has now arrived, and what a book it is! More than a cookbook, it is the story of the restaurant--from its beginnings as a breakfast-only place--to its current standing as a Highway 1 destination. The recipes reflect the restaurant's focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. As Muhlke writes, "should you crave yam-and-sweet-potato pie in April, you’ll miss out unless you skip ahead to October." Covering all courses, recipes include Rockfish Scampi and Flatbread, Parker House Rolls, Braised Venison Osso Bucco, Scones, and Mont Blanc. Interspersed among the recipes, there are wonderful accounts of local purveyors and characters.
